When might specialist support be needed through pregnancy?
- Elective caesarean.
- Endocrine conditions.
- Congenital abnormalities
- Pre-term/expected neonatal units admission.
- Multiple pregnancy.
- Previous breast surgery.
- Previous breastfeeding trauma.
- Advanced medications.
When might specialist support be needed when baby is 0 - 14 days ?
- Babies with 5 day weight loss >10%.
- Babies that have had referral to Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) for feeding issues .
- Mothers that require additional support for complex breastfeeding challenges (poor tone, abnormalities etc).

Babies 14 + days old Feeding Support
If you have any feeding questions or concerns speak to the Healthy Child Programme Single Point of Access (SPA) who supports families from 14 + days and beyond.
When might specialist support be needed when baby is 14 + days old?
- Baby in/recent admission to Paediatric assessment unit (PAU) with feeding related issues.
- Readmission to acute services in the neonatal period with feeding related issues.
- Low birth weigh with feeding issues. (<2.5kg).
- Infant weight issue (not achieving optimal growth).
- Infant health issues that are affecting infant feeding includes possible tongue tie, pre-term, non-resolving jaundice, persistently unsettled, cleft lip/plate, etc).
- Maternal Health issues such as persistent nipple soreness and damage persistent blocked ducts and Mastitis.
- Previous breast surgery.
- Maternal medication use that affects breastmilk and /or breastmilk supply.
- Loan of Breast Pumps if clinically required.

whg Children’s Champion Team support families with;
- Expecting a baby and want to know more information and support about feeding your baby?
- Commenced feeding baby but would benefit from emotional support or attendance at a peer support group.
- Parent would like more information about feeding their baby, or to discuss past experiences, expectations or worries about breastfeeding.
- Support to meet other new and expectant parents at our peer support groups which are delivered across the borough weekly.
